Comparisons between sediment transport models and observations made in wave and current flows above plane beds

چکیده
As a part of the MAST2 GS-M Coastal Morphodynamics project, the predictions of four sediment transport models have been compared with detailed laboratory data sets obtained in the bottom boundary layer beneath regular waves, asymmetrical waves, and regular waves superimposed co-linearly on a current. Each data set was obtained in plane bed, sheet flow, conditions and each of the four untuned numerical models has provided a one-dimensional vertical (lDVj, time-varying, representation of the various experimental situations. Comparisons have been made between the model predictions and measurements of both time-dependent sediment concentration, and also wave-averaged horizontal velocity and concentration. For the asymmetrical waves and for the combined wave-current flows, comparisons have been made with vertical profiles of the cycle-averaged sediment flux, and also with the vertically-integrated net sediment transport rate. Each of the turbulence diffusion models gives an accurate estimate of the net transport rate (invariably well within a factor of 2 of the measured value). In contrast, none of the models provides a good detailed description of the time-dependent suspended sediment concentration, due mainly to the inability of conventional turbulence diffusion schemes to represent the entrainment of sediment into suspension by convective events at flow reversal. However, in the cases considered here, this has not seriously affected the model predictions of the net sediment flux, due ’ Corresponding author. ’ Present address: University of Twente, Faculty Technology and Management, Department of Civil Engineering, P.O. Sediment Transport Modelling for Coastal Morphodynamics
The accurate prediction of sand transport rates in the coastal zone depends not only upon the choice of sediment transport model but also, rather critically, upon the formulation used to predict the bed roughness (ks). Sand transport rates are modelled here using both a One-equation, turbulence-closure, TKE-model and also Bijker’s sand transport model. Following some remarks about the nature an...
متن کاملExperimental Investigation of Flash Flood Resulting from Dam-Break on Bed Sediment Transport
Varied flows such as flooding resulting from dam break can happen due to earthquakes, seepage, bombing, overtopping, mistake in design and project performance as well as causing financial damages and human losses. Unsteady flow during flooding events has a high impact on flow field pattern, sediment motion, ecology and also, distribution of contamination in the river. In this study, the impact ...
متن کاملIntrawave observations of sediment entrainment processes above sand ripples under irregular waves
[1] Measurements of intrawave sediment entrainment processes are reported above ripples under irregular waves generated in a large‐scale flume facility. The data consist of substantive observations of small‐scale processes collected at high spatial and temporal resolution under irregular wave forcing, typical of coastal environments. Acoustic measurements were made of water velocities, bed form...

In this paper, longshore sediment transport in littoral zones is investigated. For investigation of sediment transport in the nearshore zone, the effects of waves, currents and topographical conditions of coast are considered. Linear wave theory was used for the investigation of the wave behaviour. Governing equations of littoral current are continuity and momentum ones. For calculating concent...
